  1. The usual route, outside the Mil is to beg borrow or steal the money to get your Private Pilots ticket, then IFR, and then your Certified Flight Instructor's (CFI) cert. Maybe you make a deal with a flight school to stick with them at a reduced rate until X number of hours to get a better rate on flight school. Or, you get a loan for $25k-ish and just do it all at once at one of those flight schools in Florida or ND (don't forget to learn how to land; not doing so raises some red flags, nowadays). Either way, you then work as a CFI, either part time or full time, teaching folks to fly and making at least "beer money", until you get enough hours of flight time to make a major carrier happy. How many hours it takes depends on whether you are going to fly for Quantas or JAL or for UPS or for Podunk Aire. Either way, you work your way up, making more moolah each move, until you have your 60th birthday, when you are suddenly worth nothing at all. If that still sounds good, I hope this helps, and I wish you the best of luck with it.

BTW, what's wrong with the Mil route? Lot's o' bennies, including $ for education, if you do it right. I got physically fit, financially sound and nicely skilled in the Army, and didn't even have to kill anyone. Instead, I helped thousands of victims of disasters, etc. Example: look at MOS 21P or many more like it. Just my $.02 worth.

  2. my dad is a pilot and he was in the military but i think you can be a private pilot then work up to commuter plane

but im not certain so dont take my word for it

  3. Fly in some entry level jobs, and keep applying until you get hired by the commuter you want.
