I saw a 2 iron for sale at a retail location and the pro couldn't tell me. Is it to change the swing weight, or to create a cavity back?

  1. I am not a golfer besides put-put and I sometimes go to the driving range but I'm guessing it is so it weighs less and/or the air can go through it instead of around it. That is my guess. I also say if the pro couldn't tell I'm guessing he/she wasn't a pro.

  2. Well it would reduce the weight in the toe, which would effectively increase the weight in the heel, which would theoretically allow you to draw the ball more.  Probably someone couldn't hit the 2 iron straight so they thought they would modify it.  I have heard a lot of tricks over the years (sand down the shaft, lead tape added, rusty face etc) and never heard of anyone drilling holes in the toe of a club.  Not sure it would be legal either.

  3. I am befuddled.....I've been around golf for ages and never seen anything like that.......It could modify swing weight,  It could take weight out of the toe to promote more of a draw....It would not have an affect similar to a cavity back....you will probably never know for sure why it was done unless you can find the person that did it.

  4. I will take weight off the toe, and you will be able to give the ball a draw since when you swing you are going to roll the club over more because there is more weight on the heel.

I am not sure that it is legal though, but it may well be.
