What would be the salary range for a professional Rugby Union player?

Mike Phillips has just signed a contract for the Ospreys worth £180,000 a season for 4 years.

I think that £80.000 - £100.000 a season would be for a top player but think it is a lot less for squad players who dont play every week.

I know that about 5 years ago a Premiership regular 1st team player (non international) would be on about 30-40K pa, not a lot considering the short career span.

International players make a decent wedge but still only in the hundreds of thousand, not the millions that footballers earn.

Premiership clubs have a wage cap of £1,600,000.

Generally they'd earn £50,000-£80,000, although Ashton, the rugby league teenager who Northampton have just singed, is getting £140,000 per annum.

There are players on not much more than minimun wage, and there are players on 1million a year (after sponsorship)
