If I was to paint a house, what would I need to do? For example, do I just paint over the original paint/what would be a good paint to use/how much is typically needed (for a smaller house)/do I need a primer or stain and after the base paint do I need to use something else. etc.

Any resources or ideas are much appreciated!

  1. Here are the instructions for exterior painting:

    1. 1st walk around the house and where ever the house meet the ground you need to trench (dig) 6 inches deep, that would protect the foundation with the new paint.

    2. Mask (cover) all your windows and doors with plastic and green/red maskin tape. make sure you tape nice along the edges.

    3. Rent a hydro blast (water pressure) machine Can be found in a local home depot, and wash the whole exterior of the house. That will remove any old coats or loose stucco.

    4. Walk around the house and mark all revealed cracks in the stucco.

    5. Light sand with an electric sander and paper #80 all the wood work(trims) evenly.

    6. Patch the wood work imperfections  with a putty knife and bundo material (try to make a smooth finish) and let it dry.

    7. Light sand with an electric sander and paper #120 all the wood work(trims) evenly.

    8. Primer the wood work with exterior primer. (can be sprayed)

    9. Patch all imperfections in the stucco with a stucco patch ready mix.

    10. Primer the house with exterior primer. can be rolled or sprayed.

    11. Cut / paint with a brush along the edges.

    12. Paint the house with exterior paint. can be rolled or sprayed.

    13. I recommend Benjamin morr or Dunn Edwards paint they give AAA discounts.

    14. Good luck and god bless.

  2. The first thing is to inspect for any damaged wood and replace it. Then you need to clean the surface which may include scrapping off old chipped paint and a good washing down. After ample drying time most paint manufactures recommend using a sealer if any bare wood is exposed, and I'd recommend a product named Kiltz which will stop possible mold or staining in the future. Then it's time to paint and the old saying goes, the better the paint, the less time between needing a fresh coat and I'd recommend a brand name like Glidden or Bauer.

Painting isn't fast or easy if it's going to be done right. Be sure to purchase drop cloths (Cheap polyethylene plastic is ok) and three quality brushes  (wide 5", 3" and a 1 1/2" for detailing around windows), maybe a couple rolls of the blue painters tape or a Wagner air sprayer is great for the big areas.

  3. The function of a room is a crucial factor when deciding on its color and finish. So before you go painting a room or anything else, it is worth taking the time to find out how colors behave in combination with each other.

  4. i care is right,,,,inspect for damaged wood,,and repair,,, mix half and half   bleach and water,,spray it on with garden sprayer,,be sure to wear goggles and mask,,, and protection for flowers and shrubs,,,  let it sit for bout 30 minutes or so,,rinse off with water hose,,, after it has dried  scrape any loose paint ,,chalk joints ,,  prime  bare wood spots ,,with Kilz Exterior primer,,latex,,,dries real quick,,then  you are ready to paint,,, never paint in direct sun light, ( people think painters  are lazy,,for painting in the shade  but there is a reason for it,),,,it  will cause the paint to blister and peel later,,,if the surface is hot to the touch,,,spray with water hose,,let it dry bout 15 minutes then paint,,,  start at the top and work your way down,,,Benjamin Moore,,soft glo exterior paint is what i use  mostly,,it has more acrlic  in it ,,that makes it last longer,,,,,
