Question:

What would be the value to a coin collector of Eisenhower dollars?

I came across a box with 40 Eisenhower dollars in my mother's estate. I tried to post them on Craig's List - the whole lot for $60, that only $1.50 for each. I've seen them posted on EBAY anywhere from $3 to $6 apiece. I received an offer of 50 cents for the whole lot, then my posting was flagged and taken off CL. The moderator said that I cannot sell coins on CL for more than face value. They must have more than face value - they are obsolete and not being made any longer. Please advise. Thanks.

  1. If the coins are just the normal Ike dollars in circulated condition they are worth only a dollar. I don't know what CL is but they must not have many people selling coins, if they only let them sell them for face value. The ones you see on eBay are either in mint state or are the special ones from the mint that are in brown boxes or blue envelopes. There is not a lot of people collecting Ike dollars for they are not that great of a design and are still new. Wait about 20 years or so if you can hold onto them that long without spending them. Hope this helps. PS I do have a complete set including the special proofs. All coins are in mint state.

  2. Sorry to say these coins have little or no value over face. The ones you saw on eBay were probably PROOF sets (coins specially minted for collectors. They are higher quality than coins minted for general circulation). I assume your coins were in circulation. Your mother just saved them out when she happened to see one, right? These dollars were never popular and were only minted a few years in the 1970's. Good luck selling them for even $1.50 each!  If you don't get any takers, try $45 - that's a little over $1.10 each. I predict, though, you'll end up taking them to the bank and just exchanging them  for a one-on-one trade for paper bills.
