What would cause a pen to burst all on it own?

I was laying on my bed two days ago and i was texting my friend. There was a pen on my bed cause i was working on a presentation a few hours earlier and i still had papers and a pen on my bed. I was laying there and I hadn't moved for at least 20 minutes. All of a sudden I heard like a popping noise and I looked over and I saw that the pen had just burst all on it own. It just burst into 4 or 5 parts. Half of it flew onto the floor and the other half stayed on the bed. The ink part stayed intact. It was not hot in my room. The air-conditioner wasn't on. I didn't touch the pen. I wasn't leaning on it. I hadn't touched it for at least an hour. What would cause this to happen?

  1. I guess the same thing that causes them to burst everytime i put one in my shirt pocket.

Perhaps you sat on it and cracked the plastic to get it started. Lots of things could have happened. Certainly this is not a question for paranormal, but a question for the physics or mechanics section. Why do pens periodically burst? Good question.

  2. Pressure. It may no have been hot to you but the ink can heat up fairly easy.

  3. Pressure change in the atmosphere.

  4. I don't know.  It was just a cheap pen I guess.

Was there a spring in it?  Did it s***w together?  Those are two ways of storing energy.

  5. ....pressure...or ghosts.  ;)

  6. hea? pressure?

  7. That's very surprising but not unheard of. Polymeric materials can and often do have stress (think of it as a pent-up force) frozen into them when they are solidified from the liquid state. Plastics can crack from this stress as they age, and perhaps even shatter under some circumstances. It's not a pressure build-up, but rather a weakening of the polymer material under the built-in stress. I think your experiences is very unexpected but not impossible. It's important to keep in mind that unexpected does not equal paranormal.

  8. ghosts..defenetly

  9. pressure build up

  10. Anything from pressure to faulty make
