What would cause an outboard motor not to accellerate?

I have a Mercury 125hp outboard saltwater motor on my boat. I went to use the boat yesterday for the first time in a few weeks. The motor started up with out a problem, but once I got out of the canal and went to accellerate, the boat did not pick up speed and plan off.

Any help on what might cause this would be appreciated.

  1. did the engine run funny when you went to speed up? If not, first check your cables and make sure they are connected and working. Then check out the easiest things first. Fuel filter, fuel pump, spark advance etc.

  2. IF  the boat moved at all and didnt get up to speed u might have a proppller problem. u have to check if has cracks or dings and dents these are Very common. but the lower drive might be a problem if it didnt move at alll.

  3. Fuel filter>Carb need cleaning> Coil bad>Many thing could be the problem>Pluged vent fuel tank>Pump the primer blub while going>>
