What would cause female dog to have weight loss and tarry stools?

I highly suggest you see a vet for a stool sample. If you mean tarry as in black then that often indicates the presence of blood. After my dog gave birth and ate the placentas she had very tarry stools for a few days. Weight loss can be from anything but it's never a good sign..

Nobody here can tell you.  The only way to find out is to take the dog to the Vet along with a stool sample for testing.

I would take her to the vet with a stool sample, they can check it.  Tarry might mean blood.  If you want they can take some stool out when you get there.
