What would cause the sky to be red?

this morning I woke up at 6 15 to thunder rumbling in the distance. I rolled over and saw that the sky was very cloudy, and slightly red.

I had to get up and get dressed because I live in a poorly anchored trailer, so I have to leave when severe weather moves in.

As I was driving, the storm finally moved over and I saw in the distance the sky was red, and the clouds were not normal. They looked blotchy and red and spread out in a weird way. I can't describe it.

what would cause this?

  1. Its due to the sun angle. At dawn, the sunlight is aimed so that red light is scattered the most. The clouds scatter red light in such a way that it makes them appear as red.
