People years ago were put in mental hospitals for different reasons (like in the movie Girl, Interrupted she was put in for Borderline Personality Disorder) but what would get someone put in a mental hospital now? And how does someone get put in one...like are they given a choice? Are they thrown into one? And what kinda reasons would someone put themselves in a mental hospital? (If you can do that)

  1. I was in a mental health facility for 11 days last year.  I was suicidal because of several medical problems that were growing more and more overwhelming.  I'm 28, but I knew that I was not in a state of mind to make decisions for myself, so my husband, my mom and my psychiatrist made the decision to have me admitted.  If you have tried to commit suicide or made threats against others (with a history of mental health issues) , chances are that you'll be taken into protective custody by police and "forced" to go.  In the movie Girl, Interrupted, she was in the hospital because she had no family and was in trouble with the law, not based on her diagnosis alone.

  2. It's not as easy as people think it is to get admitted into a mental health hospital. Most times the person has to willingly admit themselves before they will be admitted. If they are clearly in a delusional state and/or suicidal they might have a medical guardian or a medical POA to get them in. Most times when people go to the hospital for mental health issues the hospital will admit and keep them in their short term mental health wing of the hospital. If they see the person is making no progress and if the doctor does not recommend them to be discharged they will be transported to a long term mental health hospital (the psych hospital). There are different circumstances for different people. If the person has a developmental disability they might transport them to a long term institution. Most times they are trying to get them out rather then get them in..it's all about the money baby!!! They just want to get paid!!! If you have no insurance or state disability it's very very hard. Good Luck!!

  3. a hospital can give you a form 1, which means they can keep you there for 72 hours (if i am correct?) if you are a threat to yourself or a threat to anyone else

check it in google under the mental health act

    take care

  4. If you admit yourself, you are there for 72 hours for observation. After that, you can leave. If a psychiatrist at any time thinks you are a danger to yourself or others, are suicidal or homicidal, they will get a court order to keep you for as long as they think is necessary.

That's the key, tho. You can only be committed against your will if you are a danger to yourself or others. Not just because they think you're weird.

  5. if you tell a doctor or therapist or guidance counselor... anyone with authority really that you're thinking about hurting yourself or others. if you attempt suicide, if you have a major psychotic episode, if you have schizophrenia, etc.

if they're over 18 their parents can't make them go but the law (therapists, police, etc.) can. they can't hold you forever though.

you can put yourself in a mental hospital, but you can't take yourself out if you sign yourself into their care. THEY decide when to let you go (remember on Girl, Interrupted with that girl?). i'd put myself in for an eating disorder, or for attempted suicides, or self injury. i probably should.

  6. You can get anyone detained for a period of 48hrs If they're a danger to themselves and others. Once they are evaluated the doctor will decide if they are to be released.

  7. You can be mandated into a Mental Institution or Hospital if you are a danger to yourself or others.  My son was just put into a Mental Hospital against his will and he eloped twice necessitating helicopters to track him down and bring him back.  He was in a manic episode and his mind was racing so fast that he got migrane headaches.   He jumped fromt he upstairs bedroom windows and pulled everything from inside the house and put it on the front lawn.  He did all of this within hours.  It took me two days, with the help of friends, to put the stuff back.

Hope this helped.  Good luck 2U.

  8. Being a danger to yourself or others - in which case you're only given the choice to go in voluntarily or involuntarily (not really a choice). You can put yourself in a hospital if you have suicidal feelings or safety issues.

Other reasons are if you have a mental illness, and are unable to care for yourself.

  9. the most common reasons are that you try and do harm to yourself, or to others. you can put yourself into the hospital- people do it all the time. usually the person has a mental illness already, and sometimes things just get a bit overwhelming, and they need a safe place to go and regroup-once they start to feel better, they can sign themselves out again.

  10. Eating disorder

    Drinking addiction

    Drug addiction

    Suicide idealation

I was put in a hospital on a 5150. They wouldn't let me go home.

I left after a week because my parents said that they'd take care of me.
