Its a Harley Sportster and I'm painting some of the body with Harley spray paint. The muffler, which is chrome-plated is in the way for some so I was wondering if I could spray the muffler. Would it get too hot for the paint while riding?

  1. most times you paint chrome it flakes bad but it would change colors

  2. Unless you are using high-temperature spray paint, it will quickly burn off the muffler.  If you use a high temp engine enamel, it should last a while, but eventually you'll probably have to repaint it, due to discoloration.

  3. For what it takes to mask it just mask it off. A bit of newspaper and masking tape and you get to keep your shiny chrome pipes.

  4. If it's heat proof paint for engines it might last a while but usually paint over chrome doesn't look good very long with that kind of heat.Harley spray paint? They really have such a thing?I ride Harleys but i swear those people will do anything for a buck!

  5. The paint would eventually melt off. It may even produce a level of smoke that could be toxic. You need to be careful.

  6. Why dont you just pull the pipes off?

  7. It would probably be OK... mufflers do not get as hot as header pipes and most paints can take some heat. Question... cant you tape off the mufflers with newspaper and avoid painting them??? Also you should scratch up (sandpaper) your chrome to help the paint adhear and I hate to see you do that.
