What would happen if I were to run gasoline through my LP powered forklift?

I ran out of LP the other day for my forklift. My fellow mechanic said we should just ghetto rig up a gasoline tank to it and see if it works. Without any modifications to the forklift which is powered by LP and uses a typical 4cyl engine, can you run the lift on gasoline? What would happen and if it does not work, why not?
