  1. I see two possibilities. Either we'd have a well-educated, free thinking society who aren't bound by any social programming... Different will not automatically equal bad. People will actually have real social skills. There will be no struggle for status... no judgement based on the clothing brand you wear, the kind of house you live in, the kind of car you drive, the way your lawn looks, the toys your children have, the places you vacation to, etc. People won't just readily accept something simply because someone "higher up" told them to, or because "everybody else does" or "it's normal". There would be no stupid laws holding anyone back from reaching their full potential. No slowing to the speed of the slowest runner. ANd no rushing if you need more time. Everyone would be able to live and learn in the way that suits them best, and we'd have no more cookie-cutter school children whose creativity and individuality is sucked out of them at an early age. It would be a truly eclectic, truly happy world.

The other possibility is that the government would see it fit to pass new laws to regulate homeschooling, as homeschoolers are now the majority and god forbid the majority of the population is well educated and noncomformist.

  2. I live in NE, more specifically MA.  I know only 5 or 6 home schooling families and with my limited knowledge I feel that the IQ of the population would dramatically drop as well as street smarts would be a thing of the past.

Some families do a great job but some don't and they have little regulation, far less than a private of public school.

  3. We would have a lot of anti-social children.

  4. We would have millions of socially inept adults.

  5. The first generation or two (or three) would come across looking horribly raised and with a poor education. Why? Because most parents didn't learn what they could've used to be good parents. It'll take a bit to reconnect with a traditional lifestyle of having parents raise their kids full-time. Part of this is due to the fact that kids have been in school so it changes the whole parenting dynamics.

After a generation or so, things would stabilize and each generation would, in general, probably become better than the one before it.

Society as we know it could change dramatically. No longer growing up with same-aged peers, the kids would likely be less peer-focused, less likely to be so concerned about material things, less likely to do the whole party scene, likely fewer pregnancies and std's and more. Of course, this is all on the assumption that a few generations would help get families back on track. It's possible that too much change has happened for the above to happen.

One thing we can say for sure is that there would certainly be fewer children skipping school. ;)

  6. That's hard to say.  I know there a lot of people out there that I don't think are qualified to parent let alone teach.  However there are a lot of teachers out there who shouldn't be teaching, and schools that are so busy pushing children to complete requirements rather than focusing on real learning.

My younger sisters were home schooled through high school.  They both tried traditional high school but it just didn't work out.  For one of them full classrooms full of noisy kids were just to overwhelming.  For the other her commitment to straight A's along for her love of the cello and drawing left her no time for sleep let alone anything fun.  They both did beautifully at a charter school that "encourages personal choice learning".

My daughter is currently attending a public junior high, but she will be attending my sisters school for high school.  It is important to me that she attend a school that will encourage her to learn and grow to her full potential in a way that is fun and interesting to her.  Meanwhile, opposite of what most people think, she will have as much social interaction as she likes.

I would have to say that if the children I know from this school are any example then we should all be homeschooling!

  7. What would happen...to what?

  8. Then ppl would be smarter and there wont be a lot of schools. :)

  9. We would probably have a lot more children who could read, write and do arithmetic...finish school earlier, get into college, etc.  ....as long as they were taught by parents who could also read, write, and do arithmetic .....that is a necessary requirement to teach your kids on your own.

  10. We, as a nation, would rapidly slide farther back the literacy and scientific lists.

  11. there would be less ratio of schools then..

  12. The government would make homeschooling illegal.  And being taught at home does not make you socially adept...like someone said on here.  It is thinking like that, that gives homeschooling a bad rep.  I know PLENTY of kids who attend school who have social handicaps. And I am sure there are home taught kids who are a little off too.  It just kills me when people have to bring up the socialization thing...especially since there have been so many studies that show that NOT TO BE TRUE.   90% of people teaching their kids primarily at home would never happen though.  It truly is not for everyone.

  13. After reading the other answers to this question, it amazes me how many people don't know anything about homeschooling yet answer questions about it.  Anyways, my answer is I think that if 90% of parents homeschooled their children the world would be much different.  More people would come out of their "formal" education knowing how to read, write, and do basic math.  There also would be more socially able people and children if most were homeschooled because they spend more time in the real world.    But successful homeschooling really depends on the work ethic and morals of the parent.  If their work ethic and morals are poor then their children will suffer unless they are very self-motivated.  Generally I believe homeschooling is the way to go for children, especially if there are more than one in the family.  Children benefit when learning with a variety of ages.

  14. there would be that many less whores in the world!

  15. That would mean that 90% of the parenting population would have to be capable of home schooling their children.  I would say that this is a gross overestimation on the percentage that actually could do a job of this.

Bottom line - the dumbing down of the population on a grander scale than already is

  16. Most of the kids would probably get a lot more dumb. But it all depends on whether or not you have enough money, or if you have the right tutors or parents.

  17. How would you ever get 90% to home school when 95% of parents can't parent? It takes being very involved with your children to home school. Most parents don't have time for the kids they seldom see now!
