What would happen if i put a "non microwave safe" plate in the microwave? do they explode or what?

  1. well, if it's a metal plate, then there will be a lot of arcing and burning of the food. if it's a plastic plate, then potentially carcinogenic substances may leak into the food. i say potentially because the plastic might react somehow to the microwave radiation. and the plastic might melt


  2. In most cases, they will melt.  If they contain metal, they could damage the microwave, or even start a fire.  Some may be made from a material that could leach hazardous chemicals into your food.

  3. I've seen some "non-microwave" ceramics shatter pretty hard.  If your hand was in there (hypothetically), you'd have a bunch of embedded glass shards to dig out.

    Mostly it's like the other guys said -- much melting, or sparking (with possible damage to the magnetron tube).
