If the earth were to stop rotating and/or revolving around the sun, how would it affect (in terms of perception) the average human on earth?

Would he/she feel dizzy? What would happen?

  1. Earth will be no more.

  2. If the Earth stops rotating everything would go out to space, and the Earth would destroy itself in a big big explosion. He/She won´t feel dizzy, He/she would die.

  3. No rotation:

The planet would NOT have one hot side and one cold side - to do that, the planet would still need to rotate to keep one side always to the sun (as the moon does to the Earth) except if not revolving around the sun (see below).

    No rotation would mean:

    1 day = 1 year

Very slight increase in mass, especially at the equator

Over a very long period, a change in the Earth's shape from an oblate spheroid to a more perfect sphere

Assume lack of rotation also means liquid core not rotating so decrease (almost to zero) of magnetic field = higher radiation levels on the surface

Significant decrease in wind; probable decrease in temperature equalisation (greater extremes)

    No revolution:

If still in the same position vis-a-vis the sun, just not going around it, then the Earth would slowly accelerate in the direction of the sun, getting hotter and hotter until it burnt up: It would 'drop into' the sun.

If not revolving around the sun because the sun wasn't there or gravity was 'turned off', then the Earth  would zoom off at a tangent to it's orbit at it's present orbital speed until it was captured by another gravitational field (it is possible that it would end up in a very eccentric, and long, orbit around Jupiter-Saturn but I haven't done the calculations and this would depend a lot on the relative positionms of the planets at the time the sun 'disappeared').

However, in both cases, how and why it stopped would probably have a greater impact than the above. The forces that would need to be exerted upon the planet to stop either revolution or rotation over a short period (e.g. a thousand years) would be so tremendous that the planet would probably be ripped apart in the process...

  4. I think... it will affect the earth magnetic field, earth will loose the balacing of forces with moon and sun ..it will also affect the gavitational forces and yes tides also.....

if in case it stop ...the part exposed to sun will be burnt or have high temp.. and other side will be cooler place.......we may see some more effect of this kind....like shifting of land .. and effect on cloud formation as well... but i feel .. in long run earth would be stable and able to adust... but may be a barren land.....like other planets.....

  5. You would feel nothing. Maybe a little heavier depending on where on earth you are located. At the equator you weigh about 0.3 percent lighter due to rotation than at the north or south pole where there is none. So if the earth stopped rotating your weight would go up a little.

If we quit revolving around the sun, I would guess that the sun would get bigger and bigger and the temperature hotter and hotter and then we would crash into it and, well, that would be that.

If the earth didn't rotate, a "day" would now be 365 days long. 182 and a half days of "night" and then the same length of "day".

  6. This sort of thing would be disastrous for life on Earth. If the Earth stopped rotating one half would be baked while the other freezes. If it stops revolving around the sun then we would accelerate towards the sun because it's only the centifugal force of the Earth that stops us from doing so.

  7. Earth rotates at about 1100 mph. If it stopped suddenly,  the atmosphere would still be in motion, and anything not anchored down would be swept into the atmosphere.

Here's a good explanation of what else could happen.
