What would happen if the police found me in Mexico without a Visa?

They never ask you for a visa, they will ask for an id,  like the passport, if you go to Mexico you have to avoid problems, because they will try  to take your money instead to deport you.

If you are going past the border area or staying more then 72 hrs. you should get a tourist card at the border...it is only $22.00...so there is no reason not to.  If you are found not to have one, you may get a small fine and sent home...no big deal...but there is no reason to violate Mexican law...it is very easy to comply.

Nothing, you just need an ID if you are not staying any longer than the weekend, Otherwise, get a tourist card at the border.

At a guess, you could get fined, or fined and deported.

If you are a US citizen , nothing will happen since visa is not required for you, only positive identification, like passport or valid drivers licence.
