I know you have to open one side and keep the other side closed and raise the water, but what would happen if they were both opened at the same time? Would somewhere flood?

  1. The canal would rapidly become Panama's largest saltwater  river.

  2. There would be no increased risk of flooding.

The amount of water available to flow into the canal is controlled at the centre, not at the ends.

If both ends were left closed, and the water from the middle allowed to flow some flooding might be possible.

But here is a surprising question for you:

If you enter the Panama Canal  facing the setting sun, from which ocean have you come?

    (PACIFIC)

  3. You'd end up with rivers running from the lake in the middle down to each ocean.
