  1. ... the world would implode in a black hole.

I think it would just say that the disc is unable to be read, or provide you with an error.

Fewer and fewer places are carrying HDDVD now. Netflix and Blockbuster in stores only carry Blu-Ray. Blockbuster online carries HD-DVD.

  2. There is zero chance of the player doing anything useful. It will probably recognize that there is a disc in place, try to play it, get nothing, and so reject it as an unplayable disc.

HD-DVD is now officially a dead format. Toshiba, the only serious backer of HD-DVD in the hardware arena, stopped making HD-DVD players back in February, and most if not all video producers have stopped making HD-DVDs by now. Also, most of the rental companies, such as Netflix and Blockbuster, dropped HD-DVD back in January or February, as it became clear that Blu-Ray had won the format wars.

Your best bet, if you're dedicated to HD-DVD, is to keep an eye on the existing content at local Big Box retailers (if they still have stock) and online merchants like Amazon.com. Some of these folks still stock HD-DVD, and while I wouldn't consider buying an HD-DVD today at full retail, if you can pick some up for $5.00 a disc or so, that's the rental price, or maybe a bit better. You can't play this once your HD-DVD player dies (well, maybe you'll find a used player on eBay), but if you think of it as a 3-5+ year rental (depending on how long the HD-DVD player lasts), it's worthwhile.
