okayy, well i have two red eared slider turtles and they have out grown the tank.

my parents think that i should let them go in the lake across from our house.

but i think that they won't survive outside and might get eaten by other animals.

do you think it's alright for me to let my two turtles live in the lake or won't they not survive.

help please and thanks.

  1. They'll be fine. Unless you live in the everglades, there isn't going to be anything big enough out there to eat them. They have their own protection, so it would be very difficult for anything to mess with them. Don't worry, they are supposed to live in the wild. They'll know what to do.

  2. People like you who mean well have fouled up far too many of our lakes and streams by releasing RESs where they don't belong. Have you ever considered that if you release two turtles the habitat will be able to support two fewer turtles that are native to the area?

Not to worry. You can place a free ad on http://craigslist.org, contact a local herpetological society, or find a new home through your vet. Don't give the tank away. That way the new owner will have to buy a new tank and might as well get one of the proper size. Alternatively, you could use a wading pool or old bathtub.

  3. if you love them dont ever let them go but i think if you let them go they might die because their used to you feeding them and doing everything for them it woyuld be tough for them

  4. I think your turtles will do fine in the lake.  I wouldn't lose a minute's worth of sleep over it.

  5. If you love them, let them go. If they come back, it was meant to be.

I live in an area where there haven't been turtles since the Pleistocene - but I saw a huge one in our lake. Let Michelangelo and Donatello go and will have a new adventure.

  6. I use to use a kiddy pool...put some rocks in the middle or I use a cement slab 12x12x1" and 2 smaller ones to hold it up and that way the turtles can get under for shade and sleeping. Also so  they can bask in the sun which is so good for them and toss some feeders in so they can eat when they get hungry.Construct a t-pee of chicken wire for the top to keep out predators.

Winter put the pond on some carpet and put in the garage. They don't hibernate in captivity but their eating slows down some.

  7. try giving them away before going to turn them loose, unless your turtles were captured from the wild not too long ago anyways, in which case you can let them go. Also if you HAVE to turn them loose, I would atleast make sure that your area is good for them all year around.  But give to a pet store would be best option.

  8. It would be completely irresponsible of you to dump your pets in a pond, not to mention what it would do to the environment.  Try and give them away on craigslist, petfinder, and please do not get anymore pets.

  9. No don't turn them out. They won't survive after being kept as pets.

  10. take them to the vet

  11. i would not let them out,we have a red slider and he has become so domesticated he would never make it in the wild..if you just walk past his tank he goes crazy because he wants you to feed him.You should get a bigger tank or just buy another tank and put them separate but please don't let them go in the lake, i don't think they will make it.
