What would happen to your car if a downed power line fell on it?

Power lines have fallen very close to my car on 3 different occasions now. What could happen if they actually fall on my car?

A first aid course I took awhile back, the paramedic teaching it told us a story of a time when a car got into an accident and knocked a powerline down right on top of the car. The driver got out, was electricuted and died because the electricity was aparently passing through his car and into the puddle that his car was resting in. Luckily, the baby in the car stayed in his childseat, and was just fine.

On the car and you decide to get out or touch the body or your window was down and your watch or bracelet touched the car then you would be dead.......

Depending on how heavy the line is, it could damage your car. The great thing about electricity, if it's a live wire, is that it will not zap you if you're in the car. You should wait until professional help gets there, because they will have to discharge (ground) your car. The rubber on your tires will insulate the car and keep you from getting hurt, but if you get out of the car and it's charged with electricity, and you have your hand on the metal and your foot touches the ground, you will be the conduit for the excess voltage, and will get hurt. If you're not in the car, stay away from the car until it can be taken care of.

nothing, you have rubber on the bottom thus grounding it.  Maybe some scratches.

You car battery would be fully charged. If the power line is down how can it fall on it?

If the car is off the wires would probably dent it, but wouldn't cause any real damage to the car.

If your in the car and the power line live so long as you stay in the car you would be OK but if you try to get out and put your foot on the ground you could get a shock.
