  1. There are basically four ways to fund the production and distribution of TV programming.  All four are currently in the marketplace.  TV commercials are one way, without them this option is removed and your choices are severely reduced.  The funding options are:

    1.  Advertiser supported, without advertiser presence within the programming, ie commercial TV

    2. In-programming advertising.  This can be blatant such as on American Idol or Survivor, or more subtle where that advertiser pays for the product to be showcased and the viewers are not made aware of it.

    3.  Community funding.  This could be done locally, but essentially its government sponsored TV.  We get decent programming on PBS but in general all government programming is not a safe healthy way for a democracy to issue entertainment and news.

    4. All subscription-based, such as HBO.  This is a great option for consumers who can (or choose to) afford to buy there own programming.

So without commercials, the choices are: more in-program advertising, more government controlled programming, and/or more out of consumers pockets.  SOMEBODY is going to pay those who make the programs.

  2. The simple but truthful answer is that there would be no TV.  Advertising revenue drives all profitability from television shows.  Without it, there would be no incentive to make TV shows, pay actors, try to have hits, etc.

The alternative would be if customers valued TV so much that they were willing to pay $500/month for it.

  3. This would put a big impact on economy because of web 2.0
