If Georgia had been allowed to join NATO then there would have been an obligation to support them.

The result would have been a major confrontation between US and Russia - as they each would have had obligations to both sides in the dispute.

Thank God they weren't NATO members.

  1. Well, the rule is that if a NATO member country is attacked, then NATO collectively comes to it's aid.  This of course will take a while because NATO being a democratic institution must fist hold a debate.  This is then followed by a vote and those who vote no are allowed to simply stay at home and watch it all on TV.  Apparently.

The trick is to avoid shooting each other [west/east] but instead encourage some other country to do a war with another country and then west can supply tanks to country A and east can supply tanks to country B.  We can then all watch on TV and see who's tanks are winning.  &etc.

  2. You are right to be thankful that they are not in NATO. To have such an irresponsible member who shows every inkling to use NATO as a 'big brother' so that the brat can go around causing mischief is bound to get us all in a sticky mess. As long as the megalomaniac is at the helm of Georgia, it must be kept out of NATO and out of the EU too.

  3. if andrew had it all the western way then im sayin tht west is dumb as sht lol

u really want this war huh?

and yeah no offence to anybody.. except for andrew of course :)

  4. Yup, Georgia brought this upon themselves. I hate to say it, but they did, and they were fully aware of the consequences. Russia is a country you don't want to **** with, and for a country of that size to mess with a country like Russia, that had to be one of the biggest mistakes ever.

  5. I love the "arnchair generals" who post on this site. Their answer to everything is to go in with "all guns blazing" - then they're the first ones to crawl under a rock when the S**t hits the fan.

NATO was formed as a defensive alliance to protect all member nations from attack - not to provide reinforcements after an invasion that went pear shaped. Logic, and the NATO mandate, would dictate that Georgia would receive no NATO support.

Russia has taken the logical military step of destroying Georgian military installations - it prevents future occurrences of the same nature.

The only reason George W is supporting the Georgian Government is his aversion to Russia and all things Russian. A dangerous stance for any world politician.

  6. I think the last two answerer's must be based in the Kremlin, so for a genuine western response, I would be very happy to cross swords with Russia, just so that it became extremely clear that they would overwhelmingly lose such a fight.

Certainly, if you fight a conventional war where the US can see you, you're dead. Russia's leaders are playing a nationalistic game with the Russian people, the best way to stop that is for Russia to get seriously burned in a foreign war, then Putin and his thugs don't look so clever.

  7. Amen to that. They were given a pathway to NATO membership, but not an actual membership.

An remember, it wasn't Russia who started this, it was Georgia with their invasion and genocide in South Ossetia, a 90% Russian province.
