  1. death cirtificate

  2. About 20% of the time the obituary will say memorial contributions can be made to the heart association, the cancer society, the diabetes association . . . which is a clue. The rest of the time you have to buy a copy of the death certificate from the county. West Virginia and Missouri have some death certificates on-line for some counties and some years. The rest of the states just have indexes, if they have anything. Many don't have anything. An index will just telll you the name, date and place, not cause.

If they died in an accident or a fire, there might be a newspaper story about it, which you would find in the microfilm at the public library.

  3. you can obtain a death certificate. This site tells you how to get one
