I'm making a lampshade for my room....out of gummi bears. I'm going to put a single layer or gummibears in a non-stick pan and melt them in the oven until they are evenly melted then when they cool I'm going to put them around a lampshade frame. I want to put some sort of protective coating on the shade to keep my cats from trying to eat it but what can I use that won't be in danger of catching fire? it's only a 40 watt bulb but it will be on a lot for 'ambient lighting' lol. :D

so what can I use?

  1. Eventually, heated sugar will mold and you will have a health problem on your hands.  I think if you went to a craft store like Hobby Lobby or Michael's or JoAnneCrafts, you would be able to find an alternative which would (1) give you the same effect you're after, and (2) be safer.

It IS a cute idea, though!  I'm sure you can come up with something!

  2. first, the heat from the bulb will melt the gummi bears. second, with the sugar in the gummi bears you are inviting all sorts of insects. third, you are going to have a heck of a time getting this mix off your lamp shade. If I were you I think I would come up with something a little more practical .

  3. Clear varnish. If you don't plan on eatting it. You can get it in a spray can.
