I just did an answer In a question about Horse Slaughter and I have been thinking about this for awhile about trying to find a vet that would basically do a spay on my fillies before selling them so never had to worry about them being breeding factories like I geld my colts as far as I know there are no vets doing this because they feel gelding is enough but in order get it started there need to be a term for it to be done on mares and fillies and a term for mares and fillies that have been fixed does anybody have an Idea and anti-slaughter members to get the idea started with vets.

  1. The fillies would be called spayed. I breed and raise race horses and when a mare that is racing has been done it is called spayed on her papers.

  2. i don't know but always wondered and all of the answers above are really good

  3. Gelding a stallion is fairly simple procedure (in the scheme of operations). To spay a filly or mare is MAJOR surgery, and I mean major. The risk to the mare is unreal, and the costs uneconomical. It would cost thousands to do!

  4. It is possible to spay a filly/mare.  Spay is the correct term.  Some vets will perform this procedure, but it is definitely uncommon to do so.  Keep looking for vets in your area that support the idea.

  5. Spaying is NOT major surgery.  We had one of our mares done a few years ago.  It's not like spaying a dog or cat; they don't have to cut the mare open.  The take a thing that looks like a chain twitch, but has a little cord thing on it instead of a chain, and insert it into her v***a.  (I think it has a small electric curren that runs through it too, to help cauterize the tissue).  They put the cord around the ovary, twist, and it just kind of "pops" off.  Pretty simple, and not very expensive.  I'm just not sure how common the procedure is.  We had ours done at the Colorado State University vet hospital.

I actually think that's a responsible idea.  Although I don't know if there is actually a name for a spayed mare...I don't think so.
