What would it take for the 2008 elections to be cancelled and/or postponed?

If the current President declares a new war, this would postpone elections.  Don't be surprised if Bush doesn't try to pull this one on Russia.

A total breakdown of national government and society.  The national elections are called for (directly and indirectly) in the Constitution.  They were held in WW II and even during the Civil War (in the states that at the time composed the Union).

Nothing. According to the constitution, the President can only hold office for 2, 4 year terms.
