Question:

What would it take to convert from automatic to standard 5 speed?

I have a 2000 mitsubishi mirage with a 4g93 engine and the 4 speed auto trans. but my trans is winding out and slipping meaning it has to be replaced or rebuilt soon so if I replace it I wanna get the 5 speed that comes with the coupe models or the standard models so what would it take obviously it would need a clutch so meaning a hole drilled in the firewall a different gauge cluster etc. but what am I needing to make it like it came from the factory with a manual tranny?

  1. Its possible, and actually I use to have a neighbor that did a auto to manual conversion on his car. He said if you can get a hold of a manual transmission with all parts from junkyard in a good condition and do it yourself, if you know how to, then it would be very cheap but very long to install. He said it took him almost a whole day to swap as he took it kind of slow though because he kept going back to the store to get more parts. When he was done with everything, it wasn't exactly like factory-wise transmission but it was close enough and has a weird little sound when shifting. If it was taken to a professional installer to do it, then it could been done perfectly. But at the end, he got rid of it and bought a new manual car. By the looks, it looks like a near 3-4 grand to let a professional to do it with all the equipment and labor.

  3. Ok, thank goodness people actually ask questions. What you are talking about is actually very easy to do. You just need to take the time out to do it,and do it right. I know a massive amount of guys who had automatics who have done conversions, but they were mainly on Hondas. It is the same concept though. What you need is the Computer for the Manual transmission of that year,and engine. Your car is going to have a Computer in it for the Automatic thats in it right now. The cars Computer is underneath the dash on most cars,but in some Mitsubishis it is under the hood. The computer has to be changed to the manual transmission computer. Each computer in each car out there in the world has tuning on the board so if your car has to go through inspection you need to have the right computer ,otherwise , when you go , it won't register properly,and then you won't be able to get your car through inspection. The reason it wouldn't be able to get through is because each computer out there has different tuning settings(more or less air flow,more gas,less gas,spark r****d,etc,you get the picture).  Other things you need are the manual transmission, and the dash pieces for the opening that the shift k**b comes up through for the interior of the car.  So, the easiest thing would be to find a junkyard that has the manual transmission version of your car with good running parts. You'll have two options for the transmission you get, either a Cable clutch, or a Hydraulic clutch. You choose which one you want. Cable clutches are a pain in the neck,and a Hydraulic clutch works the same way a clutch master cylinder works. It has bleeder screws on it to bleed out air in the clutch lines the same way most braking systems work. On some cars, the Hydraulic Clutch even has lines hooked into the master cylinder(thats not found on all cars though). Some cars even have a independent Master cylinder for the hydraulic clutch totally separate from the braking system Master cylinder. If you get a Transmission with a hydraulic clutch then you need to find out whether or not your going to need the master cylinder as well. You can tell by looking at the motor,and If you see lines running up to the master cylinder from the clutch then you'll need the master cylinder. After that you would need to change out your master cylinder in your car,and hook it up accordingly. Thats if,and only if you need the master cylinder. There is nothing saying you need it though.

    Ok, so, here is the rundown......

    You need this stuff

    1. A Manual Transmission computer

    2. A Manual Transmission(with either a hydraulic clutch,or cable clutch)(and quite possibly a Master cylinder,but you'll need to figure that out)

    3. The interior pieces that will replace your interior pieces with the manual transmission interior pieces.

    4. Tools if you don't have them.

    5. A shift k**b for your interior.  



    The easiest thing to do would be to find a Manual version of your car at a junkyard with all the parts you need. That way, you don't have to go running around looking in various places. The swap , if you know where to go should cost way under 1,000 bucks. Some places have the parts for dirt cheap. I know guys who did manual swaps in there hondas, an they only paid 200 to 500 bucks. So, look around. Manual swaps are very common. Manuals get better gas mileage anyway.

  5. It can be done but it will not be as efficient as the original.  I would advice you to go for an original version of the manual transmission one rather than the converted one.  saves you a lot of stress in the long run.  Sorry
