  1. Like the green car debate there is room and need for all types of cars. It is best not to depend on one source of fuel like we now do now. Electric cars for those non commuters, hybrids for commuters, suv for the soccer moms...etc.

Likewise energy can come from solar and wind beside just natural gas and oil. Here in CA we have the Mojave Desert that if fitted to produce solar could source the entire state of CA. Right now we do have the largest solar plant there that provides energy to 150,000 homes & businesses nearby.

For that matter hypothetically, the Southwest desert areas could provide solar to the whole country. There is problems there though...in the transfer of SE. The farther you live the weaker the energy caused by the transfer. Plus, solar panels only uses certain rays, newer panels are now being tested to collect energy for those other rays now not being used. It is  in the works but I see a breakthrough sooner rather than later.

Anyway natural gas could also provide energy too. Info below  Many of us are already using natural gas.

    What is Natural Gas?

Natural gas, in itself, might be considered a very uninteresting gas - it is colorless, shapeless, and odorless in its pure form. Quite uninteresting - except that natural gas is combustible, and when burned it gives off a great deal of energy. Unlike other fossil fuels, however, natural gas is clean burning and emits lower levels of potentially harmful byproducts into the air. We require energy constantly, to heat our homes, cook our food, and generate our electricity. It is this need for energy that has elevated natural gas to such a level of importance in our society, and in our lives.

Natural gas is a combustible mixture of hydrocarbon gases. While natural gas is formed primarily of methane, it can also include ethane, propane, butane and pentane. The composition of natural gas can vary widely.

  2. Are you talking about useing for cars?

We'd be running into the same problems, natural gas comes from the same places Oil does for the most part. The big oil companies have controlling interest, NG prices would go even higher than they already are.

If you just talking about for heating, I wouldn't know. We use NG in Texas for heat, or electric, or in my case a heat pump system.
