What would make for a good anime?

For a guy in the process of making an Aime, I need to know some of the most appealing/awesome/funniest features to making a good anime.

Every character needs to have reasons for what they are doing in other words depth, that's not necessary but it helps. Good dialog/narration is also important. Good character design though that is probably the least important. Most important would probably be over all style and clarity of the story telling method.
