  1. A staffing agency makes its money by finding the best employees and temps for companies, not for helping people find jobs. They do advertise it that way to get people in, but a lot of the agency's time is spent developing relationships with businesses so they have jobs to place people in. Sometimes when they have a job hunter that they know is great, they will try to market that person to a company, even when there's no job opening.

Most staffing agencies specialize. Some do general office work, some do computer & technology placements, so do nursing staffing, some are executive headhunters, some place day laborers. You have to decide which one you want to do.

A lot of job hunters go in and register with an agency and then never get a job. Agencies that do general office work staffing often have young people working in the offices who have no real experience working in corporations. They place someone who is 20 that they like in a job, and the person has only so-so skills, when they have lots of 30-, 40- and 50-year-olds on file who could do the job better. And then the client company wonders why they never get great help, and the older job candidates wonder what it takes to get placed. So hire recruiters that have worked in the businesses you want to cater to, people who understand what the clients' needs are. And when you place someone in a job, make sure it's the person with the best skills, not just the prettiest or hottest one.

What else makes a staffing agency special? The best agency I know offered online training in office skills through SkillSoft. If you had signed up with them, you could take any SkillSoft courses. You could also take the MOUS certification through them (for using Microsoft Office). This helped make their people even more skilled for clients, and it gave those people skills they could take elsewhere as well.

Good pay is always important. The more you pay a person, the more likely s/he is to stay on the job. Of course you have to make money, too, but pass more of it on to the employee.

    So, to summarize:

    1. Hiring recruiters who have worked in corporations and understand better what they need will help your company match better people with them.

    2. Placing your best workers in the jobs will make your clients happier.

    3. Offerring free training will make your candidates more skilled and happier.

    4. Paying your candidates well will make them happier and will keep them on the job, which will make your clients happier.
