  1. If you refer to anthropology texts or genealogical programs, you would be the granduncle to your nephew's son.  If your nephew had a grandson - you would be a great uncle.

Regardless of whether you are using the civil or cannon system, you pass the same prefix along.  A grandfather's brother is a granduncle.  A great-grandfather's brother is a great-uncle.

A lot of people mistakenly use the term "great uncle" for "grand uncle".  Remember little Elian Gonzalez - the boy whose mother died bringing him to Florida from Cuba?  The press mistakenly called his granduncle his "great uncle Lazaro".  This is a common misconception.

Here is some additional information on cousins:

  2. Well you are half right you are a great uncle and he is your great nephew.

  3. Your nephew's son is your great-nephew.  And you are his great-uncle.

  4. 2nd nephew his child will be your 3rd nephew

  5. You'd be his grand (or great, as I call it) uncle. I am a great aunt to about 18-20 children of my 8 nieces and nephews.

Your son/daughter's son would be your grandson.

  6. He would be your great nephew and you would be his great uncle.  Some people call it "grand" uncle instead, but he can't be called your grandson because he is your nephew's parent's (your sibling's) grandson.
