i've just been diagnosed with diabetes type 2. i've been taking metformin for the past 2 1/2 weeks. my morning glucose in the begining would be about 130, *it drops about 30 during the night*. these past few times it has gone down to about 120. what would be the next step to take to take it down to the 80=120 mark. i have already changed my diet. i drink water all day long, 1 diet soda for a treat usuallyon the weekends. no more sweets, snack on cheese, fruit, ham, things like that. we now cook more at home than before. what i am wondering is would insulin be the next step or would my doc up my dosage of the metformin. i am taking one daily at night.

  1. Metformin doesn't really show its full effects until you've been on it a month.  It sounds like you are on a low dose if it's one pill daily, but do you know what the dosage is? Metformin can give you digestive issues so it's common for a doctor to prescribe a low dose knowingly, then increase it after your body has adjusted to it.

Another thing you could try is a protein snack at night such as cottage cheese, maybe with some fruit.  It's supposed to keep you from going lower during the night, and keep your liver from releasing stored glucose to compensate, which results in a higher first morning blood sugar.   Personally, this did not help me but it's something that is supposed to help.

  2. There' s a variety of medications and combinations of meds that can be prescribed for type 2 diabetes. Of course, proper nutrition and exercise are important too.  You may never need insulin, and may even at some point in the future with excellent control get off oral medications too.

However, it is important not to fear insulin injections if it ever comes to that.

  3. If someone having diabetes, must be controled blood glucose a long life. Metformint is firstline medicine for diabetes, start from low dosage 500mg. metformin good medicine for diabetes people with obesity.....continuous take metformin, good diet and don't forget doing soft exercise. more detail information vist http://www.diabetes.fat-site.com

  4. If you are  a new diabetic, a lot of changes happen to you as you "get used to it" and the regime, and the medicine.

So hang in there!  I've been there for about 10 years.  It's a wild ride, but survivable.

You need to inform your doc about all this.

You may need to go to a combo of glyburide and metformin.

But I am not a doc.  Get your doc's advice and attention.

To cope with all the other stuff try see if the diabetic society has local (often free) courses on living with diabetes.

    Hang in there!
