What roads qualify for tolls?

Why would gravel "through" roads be excluded from this idea when so many gravel roads are not getting funding for pavement, wouldn't that be ONE idea of how to fund paving it?

It would seem to benefit the community by greatly reducing back road drunk drivers, littering, dumping of trash, animals that are abandoned, less wear and tear on the roads, etc.

How can this concept be recognized? Or is this just a no-go concept that I am wishing on here?

  1. It unfortunately sounds like a no-go idea.  Unimproved roads don't have high traffic volume, which is needed to offset the cost of gathering tolls.  We're already paying taxes to our states and municipalities for just these reasons you've listed.  It sounds like your local officials aren't doing their part.

Toll roads do generate revenue, but there has to be a lot of traffic to justify putting in booths and manning them with attendants.  I don't think I'd be willing to pay to travel an unimproved road, but that's just me.

I actually just read an article that detailed how states are selling toll roads to private interests.  This is disturbing on so many levels.  I just hope that the roads are maintained properly and that profit taking isn't the primary motive for the purchase.  Some of these roads are highly traveled commuter routes into our largest cities, like Chicago.

  2. vote for a conservative Government. they will tax  you to death to built it then sell it to a outside government and they will charge you a ton of money to ride on the road you paid for Toll roads are for the blind and deaf.

  3. Contact your city council field rep. for your district...if that doesn't work engage the people in your community...best of luck.

  4. well it takes a lot;  some states actually forbid tollroads, such as Missouri.   Secondly, physically speaking the road should be divided by a grass median or barrier of some sort, multi laned (at least 2 in each direction), access only at interchanges (on/off ramps) and paved.  A general idea of a toll road is that since you are paying more, the road should be more prestigious, safer and convenient (aside from paying tolls).  Toll roads connect a lot of people to a lot of people (busy routes)

One possible way the gravel road you speak of could be upgraded is if/when it sees more development of homes/businesses.
