I have read all the jargon buster reviews that are around the sites : but eventually it becomes confusing as to what to pay your pennies out on ?

Obviously quality transfer is the crucial motive of VHS TAPES onto DVDs., but do you get the quality doing them yourself as you would, if it where a factory transfer purchased movie on DVD.

In the equation does the type of DVD used by ones self attempt of transfering, enter into this question.

Because this too is an issue that I would like answers too !

Should a specific DVD be used.

I have recently had a couple of VHS films sent to me from Australia, copied on DVD , which a GOLD coloured discs,

and the quality was superb .

Any reader who has gone down this road: his tips and experiences would be graciouly appreciated by this old word traveller and no doubt by others too.

  1. Personally I would prefer to go for separate DVD recorder and VCR. Buying a combined unit means that you will at some point in the future have a machine, only half of which you will use, once you have copied your video tapes. The quality of separate units is also likely to be better than a single combined unit. And if you haven't got a VCR you can pick up a very good quality machine very cheaply, or even free, on eBay or Freecycle. And once you are finished with it you can recycle it again.

You will probably also find that you will come up against copy-protection on tapes which will prevent copying. There are ways round this, but not as far as I am aware, with a combined unit; you need to have a cable link between devices that you can interrupt with an appropriate device - see recent Answers.
