What would some reasons be for Coast Guard cutter to have communications black-out?

  1. Sunburst, most likely.


  2. In regards to the comms you are refering to, possibly equipment failure.

  3. Cloud coverage, Radar Jamming, or electric/magnetic storm.

    More likely is weather related.  There is always a secondary communications. So there is never a black out!!  If you are referring about U.S. Coast Guard

  5. There are a number of possible reasons:

    1) The ship may have cut off all electronic emissions so as to be more stealthy if they are hunting drug smugglers.

    2) The weather may be interfering with the satellite communications gear and all non-mission communications were cut off.
