What would the Federal Govt. do if one of the 50 states decided to secede from the Union?

The reason for the question was that Montana had a clause placed in it's own constitution when they joined the union that if the Federal govt. would ever enact a bill/law that infringed on Montana's citizen's freedoms, they had the legal right to leave the union. The D.C. Gun ban was had caused this to resurface and the citizens of Montana were strongly considering it had the Supreme Court upheld the D.C. gun ban

  1. They would probably laugh, claim that it is unconstitutional, and send troops in to "protect the peace"

  4. Depends on the state, how powerful it is and what it represents in the form of tax revenue to the Federal govt.

    If it was a 3rd world state like Alabama or a small northern state like Vermont, probably nothing.

    If it was a powerhouse state like California, NY, or Texas, probably war.
