They'd have a lot of starting pitchers:

Beckett

Matsuzaka

Byrd

Bucholz

Colon

Schilling

Wakefield

Lester

What would their starting rotation look??

schilling is retired n colon looks like he should b retired cuz he sucks big time.

  3. If those 3 you listed were in top form, the Boston starting 5 would be the unstoppable.

Assuming that the 5 men are in good form (as in they're not pitching as if their foot's cut off or something)

Josh Beckett-the pitcher who was just gipped of a Cy Young last year, still in his prime

Curt Schilling-one of the best pitchers to play the game and the best postseason pitcher who surprisingly hasn't won a Cy Young yet

Bartolo Colon-a Cy Young winner who still has at least a good 3-5 years left in him if the stupid injuries didn't bother him.

Daisuke Matsuzaka-a guy who's making a steady transfer from Japan to US baseball, and by next year he should be a Cy Young contender, still in the middle of his best years

Jon Lester-a young blood who's about to enter his prime.

Imagine a starting 5 like that...just the d**n injuries that makes this starting 5 impossible.

  4. Yes they can only have a 5 man rotation http://pitchings.blogspot.com/

  5. With Schilling, Colon, Wakefield and Byrd, it would look OLD.  That's WITH the other guys!

Seriously, at this point Schilling would be less of a factor even if he were healthy.  Their best rotation at this point would be Beckett, Matsuzaka, Lester, Wakefield and Byrd, in that order.  That's effectiveness, although if they're facing a team with mostly lefties or mostly righties in their lineup, the order could be juggled.

I wouldn't have much confidence in Colon anymore, and besides, at the rate he's going, ex-Sox pitchers Luis Tiant, David Wells and Rich Garces are going to be calling him Fatso.  And Buchholz is starting to look more and more like one of those fluke kids who pitched a no-hitter and then disappeared, like Juan Nieves -- or, to use a name from Red Sox past, Dave Morehead.  Lester looks like he's going to avoid that -- if he stays healthy, and since he's already faced that kind of illness once, the sad truth is that he's probably got a 50-50 chance of facing it, or something like it, again.  Hopefully not until he's done with pitching, but you never know.
