I would like to find out if the legal age for people who reside in Ohio has changed. A few rumors have been making their way "through the grapevine" and i would like to know if they are true. It would severely disappoint me if it was changed: I have heard one who was born after December 31, 1992 would have to wait until they are 16 1/2 to receive their permit and 17 until they are allowed to receive their license, and I was born shortly after the date.

  1. Turns out, the age to get your temps is 15 and 6 months for everybody, born in any year.

In my research, I was unable to find any credible source confirming any age change, and I contacted a local driving school about the matter.

The last teen driving law change was put in effect April 2007. This law only added restrictions for teen drivers, and did not change any ages.

Currently, you can get your temporary license, or temps, to start driving is when your 15 and 6 months.

You’ll have to drive with a licensed parent/guardian in the passenger’s seat (not very fun, I know!!).

When your 16 years old, you can get your “full” probationary license. You can then starting driving on your own, or with one other friend, but not between 12:00am and 6:00am.

When your 17, you still have those restrictions on when you can drive, but you can take more than one friend.

Finally, when your 18, you’ll have your full license which doesn’t have restrictions.

  2. The situation is actually somewhat different ... but it has changed. You can still be licensed at 16, but it is a probationary license and has restrictions until you are 18.

But if you're concerned about being able to go out for a romantic type ride, it's still going to be legal at 16 ... if you do the right things early

You can receive a temporary permit, in effect a learner's permit, as soon as you and 15 years, six months. You can receive a driver's license at 16 provided that you have held a temporary permit for six months. The biggest restriction from 16 until 18 is that you cannot transport more than one passenger (other than the listed family members) unless you have a parent or guardian in the front passenger seat.

You have to complete 50 hours of driving with a parent or guardian, including 10 hours of nighttime driving, in addition to the driver education requirement of 24 hours of classroom instruction and 8 hours behind the wheel.

So you cant drive yourself and two pals to school. But you can drive one.

You are also restricted from driving between midnight and 6 a.m. unless you meet the requirements of need to drive for work purposes.

They don't need any excuse to pull you over for violating the number of passengers limit. They would need a reason for stopping you for violating the curfew, but that could as simple as a routine traffic stop.
