  1. Beans, Garlic Bread, Potato Salad, Fries (In some cases.)

  2. Most side dishes are vegetarian, so those are a common choice. Some folks accomodate vegers by grilling meat substitutes or "portobello burgers" or some vegers bring their own fare to grill.

  3. Beans, Garlic Bread, Potato Salad

    or veggie burgers!! =]

  4. I make my own veg bbq out of seitan, it's really quite good.

  5. meat substitute what else.

  6. When my family has BBQ's, they do more than just meat... I mean, there's enough obesity and heart disease in my family without that.

We usually have tons of broccoli, onion, mushrooms, zucchini, corn and other vegetables that get grilled up. There's usually baked potatoes in their jackets, in aluminum foil. My mom frequently buys canned vegetarian bean chili to pour over potatoes at grills, and baked potatoes are fine even with BBQ sauce.

I never make anyone grill anything just for me, unless I'm doing the grill myself (in which case there's grilled marinated tofu, veggie dogs and veggie burgers, etc). If I'm going over somewhere, I make do with what they offer. Also, if it seems like a vegetarian option is unwelcome on the menu, I won't go (but that never happens) - but for example, obviously not going to go to the Smith Family Animal Flesh Feast-Off 2008: All Meat All Day (like anybody has those? ~___~; That reminds me of the guy in the store the other day looking for "baby mayonnaise"... please, is being healthy completely off of people's to do lists?)

  7. LOL try being VEGAN at a BBQ! LOL    Then, you can't eat the potato salad that everyone here talks about! You could probably eat plain potato chips, though! Watch out for those "a hint of lime" tortilla chips because they contain "whey" a milk product. Those sneaky lil  buggers! No Nacho Doritos, no... gosh... not much baked goods, not even the bun you put your vegetarian meat substitute in!

It's a little difficult to be vegan, but not impossible! really, it works on in the end, if you  bring your own item to grill and a bun too.

You can bring some Yummy watermelon, cantaloupe, blueberries, strawberries or whatever fruit is in season! and a veggie tray! It's good to get the kids to eat veggies instead of the potato chips that the host of the BBQ was probably going to provide for snacks. (ok, depending on the host. My family is pretty health conscious! We only get potato chips as a special treat at these occasional holiday functions!! )

PS. You can always drink lots of soda pop (perfect for special occasions! Especially great if you don't usually drink it at home on a daily basis! I can't! I'm sort of limited on funds! It's probably all that darn $3 Bossa Nova Acai juice I splurge on! Yikes! Acai is very good for you! highest antioxidants available!)

  10. I just got home from a barbecue where I ate a vegan boca burger, some pasta salad and a raspberry chocolate chip blondie.

  11. BRUSHCETTA(sp?) BURGERS!

  18. You can make marinated barbequed vegetables, grilled and marinated portobello mushrooms with onions and bell peppers, grilled vegetbles, cornbread and rolls, bbq beans, coleslaw, vegan brisket, vegan ribz, grilled pineapple rings, corn on the cob, eggplant "steaks" or stuffed eggplants, vegetables wrapped in foil(my favorite is broccoli with butter and salt), veggie hot dogs, burgers, sausage, other veggie meats, potatoes mashed, baked, salad, other potato dishes, marinated tofu, seiten or tempeh, baked sweet potatoes with maple syrup and pecans.

    Here are some recipies:

    Barbecued Seitan Ribz

    1 cup vital wheat gluten

    2 teaspoons smoked Spanish paprika

    2 tablespoons nutritional yeast

    2 teaspoons onion powder

    1 teaspoon garlic powder

    3/4 cup water

2 tablespoons tahini or other nut butter

    1 teaspoon Liquid Smoke

    1 tablespoon soy sauce

about 1 cup of your favorite barbecue sauce

Preheat the oven to 350 and lightly spray an 8x8 baking dish with canola oil. Mix the first 5 ingredients together in a large bowl. Mix the water with the nut butter, Liquid Smoke, and soy sauce and add it to the dry ingredients. Stir to mix well and then knead lightly in the bowl for a couple of minutes.

Put the dough into the baking dish and flatten it so that it evenly fills the pan. Take a sharp knife and cut it into 8 strips; then turn the pan and cut those strips in half to form 16 pieces.

Put it in the oven and bake for 25 minutes. While it's cooking prepare your grill.

Remove it from the oven and carefully re-cut each strip, going over each cut to make sure that the ribz will pull apart easily later. Generously brush the top with barbecue sauce. Take it to the grill and invert the whole baking dish onto the grill (or use a large spatula to lift the seitan out, placing it sauce-side down on the grill). Brush the top of the seitan with more sauce.

Watch it closely to make sure that it doesn't burn. When sufficiently brown on one side, turn over and cook the other side, adding more sauce, if necessary. When done, remove to a platter and cut or pull apart the individual ribs to serve.

Kabobos - You can put tofu/seiten and a variety of vegetables like bell peppers, mushrooms, zucchini, eggplant, tomatoes, squash, onions, etc. Here are some good recipes:
