The oil stops flowing and the cars are all gone now.. Would you still be free? Would still get out of the house everyday without the wheels? Would you walk to the store at night and get your snacks and cigs or whatever? OR, would you rely more on MAN for those things?

  1. Order online, use delivery services.  Not all women have a man to rely on.  And yeah, given time I could walk a quite a long ways if I needed to.  Your analogy is a sieve.

  2. Well let's see, I could walk. I could always bike. In my situation right now I could roll my motorized wheel-chaired self down to the store.

As for who would protect me, well they make pepper spray, guns and knives for a reason. I don't see what oil has to do with me being a woman. A man is no more safe light at night than a woman is, especially if it's a bad neighborhood/area of town.

  3. What would men and women do if the oil stopped flowing? We'd all have to walk and bike and get cars that run on different fuels. Ever heard of mass transit? I'm sure we'd have a few different options since Americans usually come up with a few solutions when there's a crisis.  I live in a safe neighborhood and walk at night all the time. I bike on a regular basis as well-so don't need the wheels and don't need a guy to get me a thing. You sound so needy to be needed-if you want to get snacks for someone and be relied on-volunteer and run errands for the disabled. We're not helpless little women who need a big strong man like you to protect us hon.

  4. I'd walk and I'd bike. Maybe I'd buy a Segway. You don't need a car or a man to get snacks.

  5. If the oil stopped flowing whatever your gender we would all be in a world of hurt.

There would be no snacks or cigs or anything at the store.  Without oil there would be no diesel for the trucks to deliver.  There would be no or little electricity to charge your Sedgway battery.

Thhe world's economy is dependent on oil.  Until that is changed we are all hostage to the oil producing nations

  6. My husband doesn't drive and we only have one car, which is over 10 years old.  We've worked hard to make sure that we're not dependent upon the car.  We both take the bus to work and I walk home - it's only 4 miles.  I'd probably do better than him in that respect, since I'm in better shape from all the walking.  We live within walking distance of three groceries, multiple restaurants, bakeries, a few hardware stores and everything we could need.  Making large trips might be a problem, but we'd probably just hook up some kind of bike trailer to the bikes and use those for hauling.

PS - 4 miles is easy, especially when compared to being crammed into a bus like a sardine in the summer heat.  Several people who ride my bus in the morning walk home in the afternoon.  It takes roughly an hour.  Not a big deal, although the first 1.5 miles are uphill, which is a pain.  The last mile is through a park so that makes up for it.

Anyone who thinks walking 4 miles is impossible needs to get out and exercise more.

  7. I have a "hummer" wagon that I load my three kids in a go all the time anyway(I even take it hiking in the mountains). I also have a great husband who makes plenty of money, so I'm good no matter what happens!!

  8. I have gone without a car many times and I assure you I can walk a long distance or ride a bike.  I don't rely on anyone.  As for cigarettes I don't smoke and I can grow my own snacks.  You seem to be the one who has more of an issue with all of this.

  9. i don't have a car and walk to the shops anyway :-) day or night, doesn't bother me. i don't smoke anymore though

wow, thumbs down for saying i don't have a car and walk to the shops! so much for doing my bit for my health / fitness and the environment! that's got to be the daftest thumbs down ever :-)

  10. I would walk or ride my bike. I've started walking to the store anyway. It's only a mile.

  11. uhm..i dont even drive anyhow...as of now if i do need a ride , i either use a cab, a bus..or my dad drives me.

but if i had none of those options..i would walk..like a normally do.

and lol the store at night? thats the time i prefer to go! i walk like 2 or 3 in the morning to the store.

  12. Well, it's going to happen anyway one of these days so people should start getting ready for it. If it does happen, then maybe it would reduce the obesity epidemic in this country because people would have to walk more than get into their cars to drive a short distance. Other benefits that could occur are more sidewalks in many areas and people being able to walk to the stores to do their shopping because they would be built closer to their homes. As it is right now, many communities don't even have sidewalks and people are forced to walk on the sides of the streets to get from one place to another. Another possible benefit would be the return to the way neighborhoods used to be laid out. That is, a few major streets that go through the entire neighborhood and all of the side streets branching out from them and being all interconnected. We would do away with highly inefficient cul-de-sacs that often make it impossible to visit neighbors living nearby because it's a long distance to walk to their houses.

  13. I'd ride my bike or just walk if it wasn't too far.

  14. You realize that there is more than enough oil and that this crisis is artificially created, don't you.

But lets assume that the ridiculous notion comes true.

They will do the same as we would do. Walk.

    mmm

Seem that there is a good side to the oil crisis after all.

  15. Yeah yeah, that's right. You've just made yourself look complteytly ignorant and stupid.

  16. How in the world is this gender related?

If the oil stopped flowing it would affect men and women equally.  And of course we would still be free.  Oil doesn't change basic human rights.

  17. thats kinda silly...if this really happens

I'll steal one of my mom's horses keep her in the back yard

...hey that will be cool anyway!

  18. The idea of liberty and freedom predates oil. The symbol of freedom of mobility was the horse back then. I would worry more about the women. They never used horses to the same extent as men back in the day.

  19. I don't drive anyway, and the town centre is only about a mile away, so I'd have no trouble walking into town to get the shopping, I do it all the time anyway.

  20. I don't think it matters whether you are a man or a woman, if the oil stops flowing this economy and life is going to h**l.

  21. I work about an hour's walk from my house. Less if I bike. I live about 5 minutes walking distance from the grocery store. I think I'd do ok. (But I'd do my shopping in the early evening, before it gets dark. Just like I do now.)

  22. NO sorry you can't make us dependent on you by using up all the oil.  I don't drive anyways.  I would walk, ride my bike, or Rollerblade but I would do it in the daytime because I wouldn't want some desperate men who can't get women to get me while walking at night.  I don't yet have a permit to carry a concealed weapon....yet.

  23. I can see this being a pain in the a** for both sexes.  We'd all have to adapt the way we live.

I didn't start driving until I was 25.  I got to school and work for a long time by other means.  I wouldn't exactly be lost without any cars around.

  24. What is the man going to do? Carry her? I'm not sure what you are trying to get at. If the point is that we would have to go back to using animal transportation, I actually think men may be disadvantaged. I know a few women who have horses, care for horses, and know how to handle horses. I don't know a single man who does.

Or, if you want to just look at using human power to get around, take a look at poor countries where people cannot afford animals, let alone cars to get around. Usually it is the women whose job it is to walk long distances to fetch supplies.

In any case, we don't live in your fantasy world where women have to count on you to walk miles to get them cigarettes. If this is the extremes you have to go through to imagine a scenario where you would be useful, I think your question says more about you than about women.

  25. When I get my cast off my ankle next week. I will start to ride my bike again. I have a little seat for my daughter and got her a helmet and other safety items. and she loved it.

I also walk a lot with my daughter. this way we both get to spend more time together and we are staying in shape. and it's fun.

Now what will YOU do when the oil stops flowing? God Bless

  26. I don't have a car now and don't ask anyone to get me things.  I walk and take the bus.  So, I'd say no, I wouldn't depend more on men.

How would man get out of the house without wheels?

Oh, and I can totally walk four miles.  I do it fairly regularly.  If you can't walk four miles, then I sure ain't depending on you to get my snacks for me.
