  1. Exactly the same! Personly, I thik the Beverley Hillbillies had far more influence.

  2. The ISS would be a little later in coming.

  3. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a fan and it helped him out that an African American was like 3rd or 4th in command of the enterprise (I don't really watch Star Trek)

  4. Would be the same. Star Trek didnt change the history of the planet, not even the history of USA

  5. Cmon, guys, give the Trek it"s due!

First interracial kiss on TV-Lt. Uhuru and Cpt. Kirk.

Explored a lot of interesting SF ideas and helped to make SF accessible to a wide audience-who knows how many Nobel prize winners or even just lab. techs were inspired by it.

Racial and gender equality, challenged the idea of "the Russkies are EVIL" with a obviously Russian crewman.

Sure, it was still draped in the values of the day (We come in peace, shoot to kill) but it was a big step forward and big influence on the zeitgeist!

Personally, I'm more of a fan of Brittish TV SF (Doctor Who, UFO) of the same period, but Star Trek was a ground breaker in many ways. Big ups!

  6. While it is true that a lot of the people who have deveoloped the technologies we've seen in the pat 30-40 years have been Star Trek fans- we would still have them even with out Star trek.

Technology such as Computrs cellphones and the like would still have been developed as Star trek did not introduce any new Technological ideas to Science fiction- Max smart had his shoe Phone d**k tracy his watch radio so forth.

Next Star Trek did push some of the social boundries- like the first black white kiss on TV but that would probably have happend any how. The biggest differnce you would have would be minor issues- like military patches since there are a couple floating around with Ster Trek refences

  7. I am not sure Tom E is correct about the naming of the space shuttle.   The World War II Yorktown class carrier "USS Enterprise" has been claimed as ' the most glorious and honored ship in all of United States Naval history'

I assumed that the shuttle name was a tribute to the memory of that ship.

  8. .Star Trek was a TV series,to titillate the american viewer. When the series captivated world audiences,it proved a gold mine for the producers.Did'nt in any way influence events.lt was purely science fiction.Does J.K.Rowling influence the world of make believe

  9. LOL...Richard....change history? Sorry, not really. Change personal history, the thinking of the individuals who watched and liked it...yes.

Lets see, if Trek had never been aired.....the imaginations of the generation who grew up with it would be less prone to outer space/spacemen/aliens, perhaps. The vision of the travel to the stars that was so popular years earlier, and the fascination with aliens, was beginning to wind down when Trek made its debut. I find that it re-fired the lure of space among the population....and made them more accepting of the challenge of getting there.

Perhaps, it also turned the tide on the "bad alien" concept that sci fi was filled with, until then. It gave a human view to aliens...both good, bad and neutral. Until Trek, aliens were to be feared and despised. After it? Well, lets just look at Spock, shall we? LOL...an alien every girl wanted to make smile :)

  10. We wouldn't have a space shuttle named 'Enterprise'.

  11. Whoopie Goldberg might not have become an actress. She was inspired when she first saw Lt. Uhura on tv, and was quoted saying to her family "Come look! There's a black girl on TV and she 'aint no maid!" (Nichelle Nichols tells that story in the movie "Trekkies"). There were a lot of groundbreaking concepts in the show that were sort of taboo, such as interracial relationships, or living peacefully with people of all cultures (russian, scottish, african american, etc.)

The idea of having a convention for a specific form of entertainment started with Star Trek. A group of fans just wanted to get together to talk about Star Trek, and every year more and more people came, and the convention was born.

History Channel did a special on how Star Trek impacted the world, it's worth looking into. Also, Trekkies is a great documentary about the history of the show.

  12. I can't really think of how life would be without Star Trek. I love that show too much, the thought of not having it would be terrible. For the orginal series I think that it did play a role in some people's lives because it actually had a moral aspect to the show as well as science and technology. It would have some sort of impact on some things but, not as much as when they had a time travel episode and seemed to s***w the timeline aka Voyager lol.

Oh btw the Space Shuttle Enterprise was named from the TOS series. If there was no Star Trek NASA wouldn't of named it Enterprise. Why do you think they played the orginal theme from Star Trek when the shuttle came out of the hanger? and have some of the actors there? The WWII Yorktown Class carrier was scarpped. Perhaps the USS Enterprise CVN-65 aircraft carrier of today was named from the WWII carrier?
