There will ALWAYS be backstage politics. Politics happen everywhere in almost any promotion. It's just one of those things you'd have to deal with.

If there wasn't, well, maybe everyone would get along better and the writers would be the end-all, be-all authority to who gets pushed.

It would obviously be a lot less entertaining and the pseudo-sport element of it wouldn't really be fully achieved. I would expect a dramatic decline in viewers. Although I find some of the backstage politics to be really cheesy and stupid at times.
