I have been getting this pain in my throat, it feels like very tight and like a sharp pain. This has been going on for months, gradually working up to where I get it every day. It especially happens after I have had food or drink. It has started happening pretty much every night now, especially during times when I am completely relaxed, like after dinner. So finally, I went to the doctor today. I feel like the doctor just ticked me off the list and decided I was just being difficult.

He immediately decided it was due to anxiety and was basically a panic attack and said it was called 'globus hystericus'.

I tried explaining to him that I do not feel stressed and that I know what a panic attack is and that I clearly am not experiencing any anxiety. But of course it is hard to convince a doctor who doesn't even know you of this. When I got home I looked it up and read that most people who are diagnosed with this describe it as a lump in the throat feeling, this is not at all what I am experiencing, not even slightly. I feel like he totally thought I was just a silly girl with too many social problems, when I dont. I have a part time job, I go to uni, I have awesome friends and a great live in boyfriend who takes care of me and loves me. I study social work, and we have learned thoroughly about mental health and things like anxiety, but this doctor really thought that I couldn't possibly know anything about my OWN body and OWN life! I just feel so ripped off having to pay to go to the doctor and thats all he comes up with. I don't know whether to just forget it and hope it stops happening or to go somewhere else and get checked out.

I feel like this is possibly just what doctors tell you when they dont have any better ideas.

  1. Many doctors out there have forgotten to listen and just write things off quickly. Sometimes leading to death even. Though, i am not saying what you have going on is going to lead to death.

When i find a doctor like that i write that doctor off! Go find another one. Ask around first. Find one that people say listen to them. Ask if the doctor offers to meet with you for free first. Many will, not to consult on your problems, but to give you an idea if you want to spend money to see them professionally. Ask them how important it is to them what a patient is feeling and thinking.

Often people are wrote off, especially if they are younger, as if they can't know their own bodies or minds. It's something they should feel ashamed about doing, not you accepting it. When i was 17 i knew something was seriously wrong with me. I nearly died over it, finally i went to see another doctor who listened to me and rushed me in for some emergency testing. I had emergency surgery the next morning and they said they could barely believe i lived through it all. Had i listened to that moron first doctor, i would be here typing to you right now.

Don't let a doctor tell you that he knows your own mind better than you. If you don't feel stressed, don't buy this as what is happening. Though, everything you mentioned can still be stressful, don't discount that. Life can be good, but stressful at the same time. You are in school, working, dealing with a relationship.... all that can be highly stressful. But if you say you aren't having anxiety, than i believe you.

Find a good doctor, a worthwhile one. Find someone who will listen to you and not just work to get you out of his office as quickly as possible.

I don't know what is happening to you, i haven't heard of anything that would cause what you have going on. But i know it's not what that doctor pulled out of his behind to get you out of his office. You deserve better than that doctor. Go find one, dismiss this other one. Don't tell them about seeing him either. Don't tell them that the other doctor said it was globus hystericus. Leave that be and go into the new doctors like it was your first visit for this particular item. That way you get heard and not just blown off.

    good luck.
