  1. yes, Gerry R pretty much nailed it.

  2. It's raining here today, so bring an umbrella. And the evenings are still cool too, so bring a jacket.

    Other than that, bring beer money and be prepared to watch the hockey playoffs every second night.

  3. It rained today?

    I hadn't noticed.

    I need to get out more, I swear!

    Did you remember to pack any local maps by the way?

    Are you coming from overseas?

    If so, don't forget to bring along all your valid travel documents!

    And your hotel reservation(s) also - not to mention money and/or traveler's checks, credit cards, etc.

    And last but not least...

    WELCOME TO MONTREAL!!!

  4. Running shoes are fine, no winter boots needed.

    Bring layers (light coat, sweater, tshirt/polo, undesrhirt) so you can put on or take off as you need it, in case you get cold or hot.

    The rain is supposed to stop tomorrow so no need to bring an umbrella, you can buy one here at Zellers (equivalent of Target stores) for $9.

    Bring some ID. Photo ID like driver's license, and your passport would be good, but keep it in a safe place.

    You may want to bring a camera. Your cell phone should work here if you have a roaming package for North America. If you are from overseas, your phone may not work here as it may be locked out of the network.

    Same goes for a laptop or IPod...if it is from Europe, expect to need an adapter to be able to use the charger. You can get one at many tourist places or in the airport. Montreal and all of Canada use the same electrical standards as USA.

    Be careful if bringing certain medication, such as some pills for pain. If they are precription strength here (example: anything with codeine), it may be illegal to bring into Canada.

    Your ATM card will work at our machines if it is part of the CIRRUS or PLUS network. Visa and Mastercard are accepted at most restaurants and hotels. Some will also accept AmEx or Diner's Club, but don't count on it.

    Taxes are shown on your bill as TPS and TVQ, and I think are 6 or 6.5% each. You are expected to tip at restaurants, taxis, valets, and for room service. A good way to calculate the average tip is to add the two taxes together and round up to the nearest dollar (roughly 15%). Give more if you feel you got good service, less or no tip if you were not happy with the service.

    All signs are pretty much in French, so expect to see these signs:

    ARRET = STOP

    Ouest = West

    Est = East

    Nord = North

    Sud = South

    Sortie = Exit

    Gauche = Left

    Droit = Right

    Clignotant = Blinking

    You can do right on red everywhere in Quebec unless indicated otherwise....EXCEPT on the island of Montreal. On the island, you are not allowed anywhere.

    Use the Metro subway or the buses, they are safe and reliable, and less expensive than trying to park downtown.

    Gas is $1.30 a litre ($4.60/gallon) so at that rate, again it may be better not to rent a car but just use taxis or public transit. The website for the transit comission has great maps and shows the bus and Metro routes.
