Recently, I was at a lake with some friends, and a thunderstorm came up very suddenly. I have never seen a storm come up that fast. As we were leaving the beach, another person and I (stupidly) walked underneath a tree that was growing on the beach. As we passed by it, lightning struck the tree, and I found myself lying on the ground. I couldn't remember how I got there, and my head was hurting, and I was very groggy. I was dizzy, and it was hard to get up at first. I didn't have any burns or any damage other than a headache which went away, although I felt really tired and drained the rest of the day. My mom thinks that I was struck by lightning, but I don't think that's what happened. I think I just experienced some of the immediate aftermath of the lightning striking the tree. What do you think?

  1. Lightning can jump around as it is going to ground - if it is not traveling in a straight path it can veer off and strike something else before it goes to ground.  It's possible that a small amount of the charge jumped and hit you.  You might not get burned, but it would still give you a heck of a shock.

  2. You were close to where the lightning went into the ground causing some sort of electromagnetic shockwave. There are videos of people playing soccer in a storm and when lightning strikes the ground everyone on the field  instantly drops to the ground.

The lightning over there struck the tree and the charge went into the ground which is why you were knocked down. I doubt you were directly hit by the lightning. But you were affected by it.
