Question:

What would you change about your house

We're building a house right now and I know that there's always something you WISH you would have thought of before the house is finished or wish you could change. What is your story? Even if you bought a house, whether it's a different brand of windows, a better setup, an extra window, big rooms, etc.

  1. Ceiling Height, because it is WAY cheaper to get higher ceilings now, but impossible when the house is built.

  2. I would have made sure I had a mud room so that I could put things like litter boxes in there, the only place I have to put them is in the spare bedroom with my husbands musical equipment. I also would have tried to find a house with a 2 1/2 car garage (I have only a 1 car garage), at least 1 and 1/2 bathrooms (I only have 1), and a basement (I only have a crawl space)

  3. We bought a house that was several years old and although we have altered things I would make lots of changes if I was building my own.  You cannot have too many cupboards, bathrooms or electrical sockets.  That said I would like higher ceilings and larger rooms but that is really a financial problem as I cannot afford a bigger house.  I would put the electrical sockets higher up on the walls as they are mostly used for table lamps, TV's etc.  We don't have a separate utility room, only an area of the kitchen used for this.  I would like a separate one with the garden door in it and it could be a place for dirty shoes etc.  Hope your house goes well.

  4. As I am older (60) I wish that I had a one floor house instead of having two bedrooms upstairs. Even though they get used more for storage than anything else it is a pain to get up and down the stairs with my bad knees. The other thing I really wish I had was a wrap around

porch. That is a porch that goes around the house. It would be so nice to be able to sit outside on a porch and watch the world go by!

  5. The location of the office door.  Think about the placement of furniture in relation to the location of the doors into bedrooms and such.

I would have also put a ceiling fan in the kitchen since it has a vaulted ceiling.  I could probably still do that since there is electric in the ceiling, but it would have been easier if it was done in the first place.

I would have also made the master closets a little bit bigger.  We have his and hers closets and my husband's closet is a little bit small.  It's still a walk-in, but it could have been a bit bigger.

One thing I would recommend for full glass doors (like back doors) is to get the ones with the blinds between the panes of glass.  They are AWESOME!  We have a side door into the laundry room from the outside and it is a half glass door with the blinds between the glass so we could put in a dog door later on.  It's great too!

Think ahead, too, of things you may add later and what they may need.  We knew we were getting a free hot tub from a friend, so we had the patio slab poured as a thickened slab to support the weight of the hot tub and had the electricians run a 22v outlet to the patio for it.  Many people put a freezer or an extra refrigerator in the garage, but don't realize it really needs a 220v outlet so the breaker isn't tripped all the time.

Feel free to email me.  I used to work for a builder!
