Okay, so I had insurance through Progressive. My bank account was automatically charged every month for my insurance. My car's engine blew up and it is now inoperable so I cancelled my policy. My insurance is due every month on the 6th. I called Progressive on the 5th and they said that in my state, they have to have it in writing saying I want to cancel my policy. I faxed them a paper on the 6th, they cancelled it in the 10th. My bank account was charged on the 8th anf it was sent back for NSF. My bank then charged me a 35 dollar NSF fee. I called Progressive, they said I would be refunded on the 18th. Today, Progressive sent it through again and again my bank declined for NSF and I was charged another fee, which makes my account -70. I called Progressive again, they said there is nothing they can do because it is automatically sent through 2 times and that I would NOT be getting refunded because it was not an error on their part but that when I called on the 5th I should have stopped the electronic transfer from taking place. I asked why did they send it through two times knowing that my policy was cancelled and they responded that it is just set up that way. Is there anything I can do about this?

  1. Go talk to someone at your bank and explain the situation. Chances are good that they'll reverse those two charges, especially if you show them copies of the documentation proving that you had tried to cancel your policy before the date they tried to take the funds from you.

  2. talk with your bank. often they can help with cases like this and will refund the nsf charges. They have the authority so play on their pity asking for their help. From my experience it is not likely that you will get any help from the insurance company on this but try a bit more anyway just in case.

  3. True.  It's not an error on their part.  Any time you start or stop electronic funds transfers, it can take up to six weeks.  They tell you that, when you first take out the policy.

It's a highly automated process, and they don't have the control over it to make it change any faster.

This isn't just for Progressive, and it's not just for insurance companies, it's for ANY regular EFT transaction.  Thats just how they work.  Sorry.
