It's the Festival in Edinburgh and the city is very busy. My neighbours in the flat opposite (there are 3 of them) have guests and various people staying over. I've heard the stair door slam, and been woken up at 4,5, 6am on consecutive nights. It's a good job I work at home. I am tired of their drunken c**p, and have little time for the Festival in general. I have complained to them and their landlord before but with no satisfaction.

They are all foreign, and last time I complained they said I was a racist. What can I do without getting locked up..?

  1. contact your local council they will send you out a form.  you will need to keep a diary on this form for 2 weeks then send it back, they will come out and speak to them (they will not give your name)  if it doesnt stop after that they can get a court injuction on them

  2. I can sympathise with you on this one.  My upstairs neighbours made lots of noise.  As they were sharing, they seemed to be using the bedroom above mine as a bedsit, and coming back late at night/early morning nearly EVERY night, and playing music, stomping around, and shouting a lot for hours on end.  I complained to them time after time, and they said "sorry" we'll keep it down, but it never lasted.  As you know it's very stressful not getting a full nights undisturbed sleep, and you get really twitchy about every noise - you think it's all going to kick off again.

As they were renting, when this continued  on and on.... (this went on for a couple of years), I complained to their landlord,   His attitude was that I was unreasonable.  He said "they're allowed to have a party now and again - on their birthday and such like" - my reply was "they have a "birthday" nearly every night!"  I got in touch with the council and they advised to keep a diary - which I did - it's a lot of hard work.  But, I didn't have much confidence in them doing anything about it, as they didn't seem very interested.

In the end, I told the landlord that I would call him up (no matter what the hour), when his tenants were causing excessive noise - so he could see for himself what it was like being woken up or being kept awake, night after night.  Also, he could come round and see whether I was being reasonable or not.

It worked a treat - I didn't have to carry out my threat.  A short time later, they moved out - in the middle of the night, and not quietly either (a moonlight flit?)  I do hope they didn't pay the rent!!

  3. When they finally get to bed..... put your music on really loud and slam your door.  Give them a taste of their own medicine, they can't complin!

Hopefully it won't backfire and start a war!!
