I live in Germany, and my husband has paid for me to learn German in a German Integration Course.

Our last day of class is April 11th, and after the class ends, the teacher will be jobless. Today, our assignment was to walk around in the cold, hanging up signs in this little village, so that she can start another course after ours ends.

This was 30 minutes out of our class time!!!

I didn´t do it because I didn´t feel like it was the right thing to do as far as her asking us to do her job for her.

  1. i wouldnt do it either.

thats basically really not teaching you any german.

    lol...so yeah.

  2. I'd be pissed.  Do you fill out evaluations?  That'd be the place to write your comments.  Maybe mail them to the head of the learning center.

    Her actions are grossly inapproriate.

  3. tell her its tie to stop what shes doing and retire or do something else shes good at

  4. So, did you talk with anyone as you were hanging the signs? That's a very good way to learn a language, i.e., build a vocabulary and some grammar then go out and actually talk with those who speak your target language as their native tongue.

Asking the various shop owners for permission to post the flyers is a good way to learn conversational deutsch and begin to apply your class in real life.

  5. Why worry? It's mostly her problem. She should have looked for a job alot earlier than this. Suggest other jobs to her, and help her look for ads in your spare time? But I wouldn't worry too much if I were you because it's alittle of her own fault.

  6. i would have taken twice as many fliers and worked twice as long as the others in my class.  This is your TEACHER and she must work to eat, to have a place to live, and possibly to raise her children.  You are a stuck up little brat to resent giving a half hour of your time to a person who is spending much more time than just in class to help you learn to speak German and understand the people and the culture ... and by the way, what better way to get to know the people and the culture than go out and hang fliers on buildings and utility poles.

  7. Don't feel bad about your decision

she either just wanted you guys to help since she taught you and thought that it could be a sign of appreciation

but then again she could do this herself and it's cold.

I would only have done it if I really liked her and wanted to help out but also wouldn't feel bad if I said no.

  8. I think that there is a reason she does not have a job.

  9. I agree that it's a waste of your time and money that she's asking you to do those things. But maybe it's not as offensive in German culture?
