What would you do if your firm made the sexist demand that you 'Marry or be fired'?

In this article it describes how men (and women) have been given this ultimatum by their major Iranian state-owned company: http://afp.google.com/article/ALeqM5gMHmj2UuccYb3w13RrHESHUy2hMg

What do you think of this sexist policy? The article implies that primarily men are being targeted-as it is primarily men who work for the company. But both men and women have the summer to marry or lose their employment.

What do you think of the sexist ideas behind the policy? The article implies that the "young males" (and females) that make up the firm are not performing their "duty" and marrying AND are implying the "young males" may be having s*x outside of marriage (which is illegal in Iran).

What is happening to young women in the country at the same time? The article states " The country is also in the midst of an unprecedented moral crackdown which has seen tens of thousands of women warned by the police for dress deemed to be unIslamic."

Marry or be fired?

  1. I don't know about "sexist" per se', but it's definately twisted.

  2. SUE!

  3. ok...anti feminist....come on speak up...

    Please I forgot...

Tell me why feminism isnt needed in the middle east again?

  4. In Iran, this doesn't rank very high on the "outrageous crimes against human rights" scale.

Let's worry about the execution of homosexuals and the persecution of men and women by the morality police first.

  5. Since it applies to men and women it is not sexist, but is against human rights.  Thank heavens there is a separation of church and state...or is there any more?  Moral of the story.  Never work for a company owned by people from the Middle East.

  6. I think it is something that can only happen in a screwed up place like Iran.

#1 For the sake of argument, if this was my dream job and a friend felt the same way, we could "marry" but we wouldn't act like married people if we didn't want to. We could be roommates. How would the bosses find out?

#2 If it wasn't my dream job, I'd leave the place and if I had to, the country.

I am leaning towards #2, because the person I am couldn't bear to be told how to live my life.

    C. :)

  7. Quit!

    That's not a 'company'. That's a dictatorship!

    Run by Freaks...

  8. This is why I believe in the separation of church and state.  I guess I'd be fired...

  9. That's ridiculous. Their marriage, if they even find someone that desperate, will be based on someone needing to not be fired. What a strong, pure foundation.

They could legalize homosexuality and g*y marriage then the men could marry each other. We should run it by them.

  10. Well it is Iran after all, which happens to be a theocracy run by loonies, part hyper-modern, part mediaeval.

This doesn't happen in places where law is secular and predicated upon sense instead of non-sense.

If I lived in Iran and I was female, I'd probably marry, it's better than being ostracized or killed by some fundamentalists. Sad, but true.

  11. I would either sue or find another job.

  12. I'd quit! Nobody tells me how to run my love life but me.

  13. Hmmm, probably take it up with the European court? There's a law against that sorta thing, a European employers directive or something. However, although such action would be available in my country, unfortunately it would not be so all over the world.

  14. Walk!
